Larsen took Rachel home after dropping off Jack. Her unreliable car was in the shop again. She had not been alone with him, really alone, since they had kissed for the first time. The quick drive from Jack’s house to hers was not long enough to say everything she wanted to say. They were already there before she had even touched on the subject. She got out, but lingered by the car, talking to Larsen through his open window.

“So about the kiss. Kisses. Whatever,” she asked bluntly. “Where do I stand with you?

“Friends? That okay?” He lit up a cigarette. She used to hate the stench of them. But she had gotten used it being around Larsen. She had grown accustomed to him.

“Because of Gabrielle?” She had no idea how they could still be together after the fight they had at the party. Really, she could not understand why they had gotten back together in the first place. Larsen did not belong with a girl like that. One thing she remembered clearly was Gabrielle’s nasty rant insulting her. If she had disliked the other girl before, she hated her now with a passion.

“Because I need my friends. You and Jack are important to me, you know.” He blew a cloud of smoke and started his engine again.

“Glad that’s settled,” she said, unconvinced, as he drove away.
